CAN I GET ENHANCED COMPENSATION FOR A PARCEL DELIVERY?

Yes! But not all couriers offer the option. Most couriers offer up to £50 as standard compensation in the event of loss or damage to a parcel but not all couriers allow this level to be increased. Also this limit applies to the whole consignment. So if you book more than one parcel delivery at one time, this is called a consignment, and as such the maximum compensation paid out will be the single standard rate for that courier, in the event of loss or damage to any or all the parcels in the consignment, If your courier allows a higher level of compensation to be purchased and your consignment is valued at over the standard compensation offered then it is probably a good idea, for total peace of mind, to take out enhanced compensation cover for loss or damage. Usually up to a maximum of £2,500 is permitted. Costs vary but are typically around £8+vat for every £500 of additional cover. As you would expect however, some items are excluded from enhanced compensation. For example parcelforce Worldwide exclude the following from their enhanced compensation: Antiques (objects over 100 years old) Articles made largely or wholly of gold, silver or other precious metal Ceramics such as decorative china, resin and porcelain Diamonds and other precious stones Glass – items partially or wholly made of glass or containing glass Hazardous or dangerous goods, prohibited or restricted items Jewellery (except imitation) Real Fur Musical Instruments Stamps Perishable items Eggs Negotiable documents Money – current bank note, currency note or coins, credit cards, debit cards etc You might need to take special note of the rules regarding collectables. Items which have appreciated in value due to their scarcity or due to their being out of production are covered but any compensation payable for loss, or damage to any collectables is limited to the actual price paid for the collectable, not what you think that the item is worth when it was lost or damaged. Providing the consignment has been packaged correctly, any compensation payable for damage to an item will be limited to the repair cost. If the item is lost, or damaged beyond repair, a replacement will be supplied by an independent agent. The lowest of the cost/sale price will be used to settle a claim and VAT will be reimbursed in appropriate cases. Compensation for multi part consignments is paid pro-rata if some items in the consignment are lost/damaged. At the end of the day the enhanced compensation is like an insurance and it is up to you to check the individual terms and conditions applied by your courier. In particular make sure that you submit any claims within the allowed period, otherwise your claim may be rejected out of hand.
