| Over recent years there have been a number of parcel delivery scams. Below is an example of a few that have been doing the rounds. Beware who you contact and what you download. If you are not expecting a delivery be very suspicious.
A card is posted through the door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service), usually around Christmas time when a lot of people buy things online, stating that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on a premium rate number.
This scam originates from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message, you will have already been charged £15.
There have also been a couple of email scams. One email purports to come from UPS and starts the email with:
Dear Customer,
“We regret to inform you that the delivery of your shipment has been suspended for the following reasons.” It then talks about new laws within the EU about tax. It continues that adequate duties were not paid on the package. They state that the correct amount was paid by the sender to the courier but they did not pay adequate duties on the package. They then request the sum of 119 Euros to be paid in full on the package.
The email gives a contact “claims person” and email address for you to contact in order to pay the duty owing.
They claim your old tracking number is suspended due to non payment of the tax and when making contact with the “claims officer” via email or phone, you should quote a new reference number.
Another email supposedly from DHL has also been in circulation. It starts the email with
Hello!
We were not able to deliver the postal package which was sent on the 8th of July for example, in time because the recipient’s address is wrong.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our department and finishes “Your DHL Delivery Services”.
If there is no DHL branding on the email and the email doesn’t start with your name, view this as very suspicious and do not open the zip file as it probably contains a Trojan. Simply delete from your computer. If you are expecting a package delivery, contact the company direct to check the email was genuine. Notify the appropriate authorities if you suspect a scam is being committed.
